The Holy Land, 1940s
Introduction

A long-standing friend of mine was the Rev. George Bennett, a remarkable person who had lived a very full life. It was a great sadness when he died in December 2000.

During the Second World War he served as an army chaplain, and was posted for years in the Middle East. He took many fascinating pictures himself, and collected various photographs taken by his comrades (such as this panorama). George and I derived great pleasure from comparing our photographs of the Holy Land, taken over 50 years apart. When George wrote down a few memories of his time I asked if I might post it on this site, with accompanying pictures.

Over the coming months I hope to scan in many more pictures and post them here.
